Medication Safety Program
This program can provide a complete view of a patient’s medical condition and prescription drug use so you can better manage that patient’s health and wellness.
By analyzing medical diagnoses, prescription histories and the number of physician and pharmacy visits over time, Cigna generates detailed patient profiles and sends them to you and any other physicians or specialists the patient is seeing.
The Medication Safety Program checks for:
- A documented history of substance abuse
- Multiple physicians prescribing narcotics and other controlled substances
- Multiple pharmacies filling prescriptions for narcotics and other controlled substances
- High prescription fill quantities of any prescribed narcotic
See Your Patient's Complete Medication-Use Profile
When our systems reveal one or more of the above situations, the Medication Safety Program flags it and sends a medication-use profile to all of the patient's prescribing physicians. With this information, you can see a complete picture of your patient's situation and can determine if any treatment modification is needed to better manage your patient's health and wellness.
You also receive instructions on how to refer Cigna customers to behavioral health services (if they're eligible). Your patients do not receive communications from Cigna about this program.
Restrict a Patient to One Prescribing Physician
Cigna offers you the ability to restrict a patient to a single prescribing physician or a single pharmacy to receive a specific medication. This allows patients to continue with their medication therapies, but controls how and where they can obtain their medications. Using this restriction allows you to manage any overuse or potential abuse.
We also offer a toll-free number for you to contact our Special Investigation Unit (SIU) if you feel that medications may have been obtained fraudulently.
